At Psychology Melbourne, we offer a Personal Matching and Assessment service to increase the effectiveness and success of your counselling.

This session looks for a good therapeutic relationship – the crucial partnering of client and clinician - between you and your psychologist, rather than randomly assigning ’the next cab off the rank”.

This can mean better and speedier results, and substantial savings for clients. While you can make your own choice of psychologist from this site, we have found personal matching by a well-trained matching psychologist generally achieves better outcomes.

This assessment will also point to the best therapeutic approach for you: one-on-one counselling, psychological testing or group therapy, or a mix.

What is a Matching & Assessment session?

This 30–minute consultation with one of our trained matching psychologists will identify which one of our large team psychologists you will work best with.

The Personal Matching package includes:

  • A 30-min consultation with one of our trained matching psychologists.
  • Administration of several screening tests. Completing these promptly before your matching appointment is essential.
  • Selection of the psychologist best suited to your personality and issues.
  • A full report and recommendations to your matched psychologist to assist them in developing your treatment program.

Please note: our matches have a high success rate but occasionally there will be a mismatch. In such cases you will be offered a free rematch to another psychologist.

What happens in a Matching session?

Before your session you will be sent confidential intake forms and some psychological screening tests to help clarify your issues and identify any underlying concerns.

During your 30-min session, your psychologist will:

  • Identify and explore the specific goals you want from your counselling.
  • Take a brief history of you and why you are seeking counselling.
  • Explain the results of your screening tests and whether further testing may be required.
  • Explain how the group therapy can work for you.
  • Prepare you for your first session and answer your questions.
  • Provide your matched psychologist with a full report.

In general, 95% of our matches are successful, however, occasionally there will be a mismatch. In such cases you will be offered a free rematch.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the Personal Matching & Assessment session is $170. Matching sessions are available Monday to Friday, before and after hours online.

If you have a Mental Health Care Plan, a Medicare rebate applies, however some people prefer to save their rebates for their counselling sessions.

Medicare rebates are available for 10 sessions per calendar year with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. However, the person with the plan must attend the session to claim a rebate.

Once you have purchased the Personal Matching & Assessment package, reception will contact you to arrange an appointment time. Prior to your matching session, you will also be sent intake forms to fill in as well as online screening tests.

All matchings are eligible for our Introductory Counselling Program.
